We will miss you Jackie…

This has been a hard week.  Yesterday we lost a dear friend and huge supporter of Zoie Sky, Jackie Lewis.  Jackie was an amazing person.  She left a huge legacy behind of giving and serving.  She was a true example of Christ in our community.  She served on the board of All Grace Outreach (AGO) as a director.  Through her position at AGO she gave many grants to Zoie Sky because she believed in our mission to help children in need.  This was her life’s work to care for children and she will be greatly missed. Jackie did more in her short life for the Kingdom of God than many have ever done.  She was a true follower of Christ and the example she left is a challenge to us all to do more, live louder, and be more like Christ everyday.  None of us know how many days we have to build the Kingdom, and we don’t want to waste a single one.  We know Jackie didn’t waste a single second and when she entered heaven she heard the words we all long to hear “Well done”.  May we all hear those same words when we see Christ.  Jackie leaves behind a husband and four young children.  Please pray for this family as they walk this journey of grief.  May we as friends comfort them and carry some of their burden.  During this time of mourning let us hold strong to the words from God in Psalm 30:5

“Weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning.”

The Underwood Family Project

Yesterday we finished a project for the Underwood Family. They are amazing. We received their referral through a social worker and learned that the children are slowly being reunified with their mother after being in foster care for several months. With all these children have gone through, they are still some of the sweetest kindest souls we have worked with. We have become close with this family throughout the process. The children loved all our volunteers and were always offering us hugs and smiles. We are so happy we got to provide a room for them. There are currently 3 children in the home but tonight their twin sisters are returning! So please keep this family in your prayers as they continue to heal from their time in foster care and continue to build a healthy family bond. Don’t forget them…I know we won’t:)

What’s your dream?

We talk a lot about Dreams here at Zoie Sky.  And we have BIG dreams for our community, but we want to know…What is your dream for the community where you live?  What would you dream if anything was possible?  What are you doing to make those dreams come true?

Lets all dream big together, and then lets dream even BIGGER!

An Angel Tree Dream

On Christmas Eve 2013 we had the privilege of providing for another family in our community!  This was truly a Christmas miracle.  We were called by the Angel Tree Coordinator at Central Church of the Nazarene, Debi Johnson on December 22nd.  She stressed to us that their team had just dropped of some Christmas gifts for a family in our community that didn’t have anything…not a thing.  Not a couch, chairs, beds, nothing.  The only furniture in the home was a small dining table and a bassinet for the baby that was quickly outgrowing the small bed.  Debi called with a dream to provide this family with a Christmas surprise of a house that would be turned into home on Christmas eve so that this would be a Christmas they would never forget.  Of course as soon as we got the call we were in!  There was even a local family in the area that provided the monetary donation to cover the cost.  So all we were worried about was logistics.  How in the world could we get beds for the whole family set up, delivered, and with Zoie Sky “style” in just 2 days!  We frantically sent an email at 8pm on Sunday night to Dick Skaff telling him the story.  To our surprise Skaff Furniture called the next day and said that they had all the beds in stock and would be able to deliver them the next day at 9:30am (Christmas Eve)!* We were so excited it was all coming together.  When we arrived at the house the next day at 9:30 Skaff was just pulling up.  From 9:30-10:30am this family went from having barely anything to a fully furnished house! Including a Christmas Tree with gifts underneath it!  Angel Tree was awesome and brought in living room furniture, a rug, the tree, and presents; while we outfitted the room.  It was truly amazing! It was a Christmas that I know us at Zoie Sky will never forget!

What is the Impact of your gift?

What is the Impact of your gift?

Alicia tries to sleep.
It’s dark in her room as she lies on her floor grasping the lone blanket that serves as her bed. Her mind wanders as she contemplates what lies in store for her tomorrow; a full day of school….friends…homework …expectations.

She wonders if some of her friends realize just how fortunate they are not to have to worry about their next meal, a roof over their head, a warm bed to sleep in. She wonders if anyone knows, or cares, about the challenges she faces day after day.

She feels isolated and alone. The floor is cold, but still she tries to sleep.

This is just one of the examples of what many children in Genesee County face every day. As we approach our fifth year at Zoie Sky our vision of giving children a place to dream, one child at a time is clearer than ever. Making a difference in our community has been our goal from day one and that difference has come in the form of a warm bed and a brand new environment for over 150 children.

With each project, Zoie Sky leaves behind a newly furnished and decorated bedroom that has been lovingly designed specifically for that child.

But we also leave behind something even more important.

Each recipient of a Zoie Sky room is left with no doubt that three things are true. They are loved. They have value. There is hope. We have found these three gifts to be the most valuable things we give the kids of Zoie Sky.

None of this happens, however, without help. Zoie Sky is completely dependent on the financial and prayerful support of people such as you. This precious organization will simply not be able to create tears of joy another year without your generosity.

As you begin to make your holiday plans and shopping lists, please remember children like Alicia this year and partner with Zoie Sky in our mission to give all children in Genesee County a place to dream.
